Herman Rose (1909-2007) was an American painter and printmaker known for his depictions of cityscapes. He was originally trained as a draftsman before studying at the National Academy of Design in the late 1920s. Rose later worked for the Works Progress Administration’s Murals Division and then decided to work as an artist full time, mostly drawing and painting from life. He also held teaching positions at Brooklyn College, Pratt Institute, and the New School. Rose’s work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Smithsonian Institution, and the National Academy of Design.
