The Hunt is On: The Battle of the Kearsarge and the Alabama

Painting by Édouard Manet of the battle between the Kearsarge and the Alabama

Join us on Sunday, April 27 at 1 PM for The Hunt is On: The Battle of the Kearsarge and the Alabama, a gallery talk and walk by Dr. Peter van Alfen. During the Civil War, the Confederate commerce raider, CSS Alabama, became the scourge of the Atlantic Ocean, attacking, capturing, and burning dozens of Union naval and merchant vessels alike. Sent out in hunt of the Alabama, the Union sloop of war, USS Kearsarge, caught up with the raider while she was undergoing repairs at Cherbourg, France. When the Alabama eventually emerged from the port, the much-anticipated battle commenced, with hundreds of witnesses on shore and in boats, including the famed painter Édouard Manet. Within the hour, Kearsarge sank Alabama and so earned an esteemed place in naval history, along with numerous medals of honor for her crew. Dr. van Alfen will share a slideshow overview of the battle followed by a tour in the museum’s galleries to examine paintings, models, and other holdings in the Collection related to this famed duel at sea.

Peter van Alfen is Chief Curator at the American Numismatic Society and is also a graduate of the Nautical Archaeology Program at Texas A&M University.

Exhibition Opening - We Who Are Weary

We are excited to announce the opening of our latest exhibition, We Who Are Weary, about the history of the museum’s home, Sailor’s Snug Harbor. This new exhibition—staged in the restored Writing Room, an original Sailors’ Snug Harbor amenity—will present a fresh, people-focused perspective on the history of the venerable, 19th-century retirement home for mariners. Art, artifacts, and documents on display will convey typical, yet fascinating aspects of life at the institution, while also highlighting new research about the sailors and employees of color who lived and worked there. The opening reception on the evening of Thursday, May 29 will begin at 6 PM.

This exhibition was made possible, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council; the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature; the State of New York and the National Maritime Heritage Grants Program, administered by the National Park Service, Department of the Interior; and the TKF Spirit Fund. (Any opinions, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this exhibition do not necessarily reflect the views or policies of the State of New York or Department of the Interior.)

Join us on Sunday, June 22 at 11 AM for the third of six lectures in historian Patricia Salmon’s Historic Neighborhoods of Staten Island series. This lecture will focus on Stapleton. This community was a “reservoir of Teutonic Beer” owing to the presence of several German breweries that thrived off the crystal-clear water of local artesian wells. Discover the ethnic groups that labored at these and other manufactories. Their hard work helped to produce some of the most splendid architecture found on Staten Island. The lecture will also discuss the communities’ maritime history and its effects on the growth of Stapleton, as well as the professional football team that called Stapleton its home.

Concert: Téada, Live in Staten Island

PHOTO: Damien Stenson

On Tuesday, March 11, 2025 at 7 PM, the Noble Maritime Collection will host Irish band Téada for their only New York City date on their upcoming tour of the United States.  Tickets for this intimate performance at the museum are $30 each and can be purchased by clicking the button below.

Téada (meaning "strings" in the Irish language) revels in the vibrant traditional music of their native Ireland.  The band was founded in 2001 by Sligo fiddler Oisín Mac Diarmada and along with button accordion player Paul Finn, they're joined by Damien Stenson on flute, Seán Mc Elwain on guitar, and Tristan Rosenstock on bodhrán.

Téada's textural arrangements, charged with a vibrant energy, play up the structural intricacies of Irish traditional tunes passed down through generations. The Irish Times has praised the band for "keeping the traditional flag flying at full mast."

Téada captures the rawness and individuality of the solo artist within a modern group context. The band has headlined major music festivals throughout the US, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Africa, Russia, Israel and Australia.

Lecture: The Voices of Diaspora: Exploring Irish Immigration

The Departure Of Irish Emigrants For America, Circa 1880; Courtesy of Dr. Stack

The Noble Maritime Collection welcomes Dr. Elizabeth Stack, Executive Director of the American Irish Historical Society, as part of the The Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art's The Voices of Diaspora program series. The scholarly consensus is that approximately one million people died of Irish famine-related causes between 1846 and 1851. Dr. Stack will discuss conditions leading up to the failure of the potato crops and why that had devastating consequences for some of the population of Ireland. She will examine the response of the British government and the landlords, and recount testimonies from eyewitnesses. American charity in Ireland, the mass migration, and life on the so-called coffin ships as they crossed the Atlantic Ocean will also be covered.

Elizabeth Stack, PhD, is the Executive Director of the American Irish Historical Society in New York City. She was previously the executive director of the Irish American Heritage Museum in Albany, NY and before that she taught Irish and Irish American History and was an Associate Director at Fordham University’s Institute of Irish Studies. She completed her PhD at Fordham, writing about Irish and German immigrants in New York at the turn of the twentieth century. She has a master’s degree in Anglo-Irish Relations in the 20th Century from University College Dublin in Ireland. From Listowel in County Kerry, Elizabeth sees a huge connection between her own experience as an immigrant, and the important mission of the Society to preserve and share Irish contributions to American history. Dr. Stack commented, “Major areas of interaction between Ireland and America have included diplomacy, economy, education, nationalism, tourism, culture, philanthropy, and the free flow of capital. However, immigration has given the most significant and lasting link. We explore all these topics in the Society.”

This event is FREE with museum admission.

Lecture: The Art of Waiting: Snug Harbor’s Historic Graffiti and Sailor Identity

PHOTO: Ewan Shannon, chalk drawing in a hidden corner of a residence attic, 2024

Littered throughout the many buildings of Snug Harbor’s extensive campus, hundreds of pieces of graffiti left behind by former residents speak to us through time. These graffiti are not merely examples of rebellious artwork, but archives and information networks—each representing an identity preserved in a moment of creation. In this engaging lecture, Ewan Shannon will share his photographs of Snug Harbor’s idiosyncratic nautical graffiti and present the early findings of his digital preservation project. The talk will explore how the Snugs, who fraternally referred to one another as Captain regardless of rank while at sea, marked their innermost thoughts on the quiet corners of this venerable institution over a century ago.

Ewan Shannon is a historical archaeologist from Staten Island, New York. He received his bachelor's in archaeology and anthropology from the University of Rochester, and an MA from The New School for Social Research. When not performing cultural resource management in the U.S., Shannon is a site supervisor for the Smith's Island Archaeology Project in Bermuda, a multidisciplinary effort in collaboration with the Bermuda National Trust, Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo, and Bermuda Government to recover the past of ALL Bermudians within a global context.

Lecture: Shipwrecks, Coins, and Controversies

J. Childs, The Sinking of the Central America,1857
Wikimedia Commons, National Maritime Museum, London

Shipwrecks and the gold and silver coins they often contain have long been the objects of fascination and adventurous quests. This lecture by Dr. Peter van Alfen explores the development of search and excavation techniques that have led to the discovery of important wrecks and amazing finds, but also the legal, archaeological, and ethical problems that bringing coins and other artifacts to the surface entails. Among the wrecks that will be discussed is the S.S. Central America, the famed “ship of gold” that sank in 1857 on its way to New York City, a vessel that also had Staten Island connections.

Peter van Alfen is Chief Curator at the American Numismatic Society and is a graduate of the Nautical Archaeology Program at Texas A&M University. He has participated in shipwreck surveys and excavations with the Institute of Nautical Archaeology.
