Public Programs

Sea Shanty Sessions

Co-sponsored by the Folk Music Society of New York, Inc., Sea Shanty Sessions continue monthly at the museum.  The sessions are dedicated to the memory of William Main Doerflinger (1909-2000), the noted music scholar who lived near Sailors' Snug Harbor and visited often to collect shanties and traditional sailor’s songs from the residents.  You can join in or just listen to the rollicking music that almost fills the building.

Sea Shanty Sessions are held on the third Sunday of each month from 2 to 4 PM.

Free, donations appreciated.

CloseKnit

CloseKnit is expanding its horizon! Originally dedicated to providing hats and scarves to mariners, members are also making things like baby blankets for a hospital pediatric unit and hats, scarves, and mittens for children in need. The museum provides the wool—and CloseKnitters are happy to teach knitting and crocheting, at which they excel.

CloseKnit is held on the first Thursday of each month from 2 to 4 PM.

Free, donations appreciated.

Noble Storytime

Bring your grown-ups to the museum to hear stories about mermaids, pirates, ships, and the sea! Listen to staff favorites or help choose from a treasure-chest of books to hear different stories every week! Families are encouraged to come early or stay after to look at art and model ships in the galleries and color and play games in the classrooms.

Noble Storytime will be held every Saturday from 2 to 2:30 PM.

Free, with pay-what-you-wish museum admission.

The Noble Maritime Collection's public programs are supported, in part, with public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council, and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature.
