Jean Roland (1924-2024), a native Staten Islander, was a lifelong patron of the arts and philanthropist.  At 18 she began taking classes at The New School in Manhattan where she discovered the world of intellectual discourse and literature.  Her great passion was writing and poetry, particularly haikus.  She was a member of The Nobleists writing group at the Noble Maritime Collection, which published two volumes of their collective work.  Jean also studied fine arts and art history, and was an avid collector of contemporary pieces and antiques.  Her great sense of personal style caught the attention of celebrated fashion photographer Bill Cunningham, who included her and her husband Buddy in his series of candid shots taken on the streets of New York for The New York Times.  "It's important to never stop reading, learning and using the mind," Jean said.
