Elementary?
I went out with Pete and Scott to figure out about the kitchen door replacement. Listening to them, watching them work, gave more insight into our lighthouse. It’s round, you see, and the door they have to make must be curved. “Elementary, my dear Watson?” No—complex—stainless steel, damage, missing surrounds, the cement and granite threshold. They are not elementary for modern carpenters and welders; such things are rarely seen on their beats. But then again Pete and Scott are artists…
Amid words and phrases like “Arc” and “What’s your side?”
“36 5/8s. What’s yours?’
“36 ¾.”
“Okay, close.”
“Watch the lazer beam—it could blind you”
I went upstairs.
What to do in 45 minutes? Tony said he would come and get us between 11:30 and noon. I know my fellow crewmembers will hoot, but I sanded the wooden stepladder I’d found when one was needed—on the way home from a trip out. I think it’s quite lovely and I want to varnish it someday.
NO Hurry.
Lighthouse Log Book is a series of stream of consciousness writings by Executive Director Erin Urban after each Crew date at Robbins Reef. It’s informal and meant to impart a sense of the energy of the volunteers and the work they accomplish in regular seven-hour workdays to Robbins Reef Lighthouse.
